R. Kenneth Godwin

I appreciate your visiting my web page.  The links to the left take you to my courses and to current research projects.  You also can look at some of the papers and publications.

R. Kenneth Godwin (Ph.D., University of North Carolina, 1971) is the Marshall Rauch Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.  Since 1999, Godwin has been the co-editor of Political Research Quarterly, the journal of the Western Political Science Association.

Before coming to UNCC, I taught at the University of North Texas, the University of Arizona, and Oregon State University.  I have been a visiting scholar at Resources for the Future in Washington, DC and at the Battelle Human Affairs Research Center in Seattle, Washington.  My current research interests are models of interest group influence, education policy, and the teaching of tolerance.  A recent book, School Choice Tradeoffs: Liberty, Equity, and Diversity (with Frank Kemerer), won the bronze medal for the best book in education published in 2002. The book examines various school choice policies and compares their likely outcomes with current educational outcomes. Other books include Introduction to Politics, 1997 (with John Wahlke); One Billion Dollars of Influence, 1986, a work that investigates the impact of direct mail and other fundraising techniques on public policy; Psyche and Demos, 1977 (with Warren Miller); which studies the psychological and cultural factors that influence birth rates and other demographic variables, and Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Modernization, 1971, which investigates the relationships among interpersonal trust, social capital, and economic growth.

Currently I am studying the impact of recent court decisions on the re-segregation of public schools and the impacts of that re-segregation on academic outcomes.  My other major project is a series of papers with Ed Lopez and Barry Seldon that formalizes corporate lobbying efforts and their objectives.
